Meher Baba defined poise as spirituality.

“Non-wanting is the state of poise and wanting is a state of disturbed equilibrium.”

“Poise is the state of mind where nothing excites you, nothing upsets you then only can you help others, then only can you make others happy. That means love. Thinking not of yourself but of others.”

“If you are in the Sahara and for four days you have no water to drink, and all of a sudden one bottle of water appears, how do you react? If you have poise, you will let your companion drink and not mind dying and letting her live. But, if you fight and grab for it, you lack poise and spirituality.”

 2-Perfect or absolute poise.

According to Baba, spirituality means Perfect or absolute Poise means to remain unaffected by anything good or bad.  Perfect or Absolute Poise is the state of God realisation which can only be achieved with the grace of Perfect Master or Avatar.

In Baba’s words

Perfect poise is to make most of every situation. He who upsets no one is a good man. He who is not upset by anyone is God-Man.”

“True poise comes when the ego mind with all its accumulated inclinations, melts away through Divine Love and there is realization that one with all life.”

3- One should not pose to be poise

In Baba’s words:

Do not pose as being poise. Because God is everywhere. God cannot be fooled –so why pose as being something you are not?

Baba explains difference between being poise and posing to be poise

It is this poise that makes you sacrifice and makes others happy. For example, I always say make the most of everything. Here you have food, swimming, boating. Make the most of it and feel happy. Do not say it is not spiritual to enjoy innocent pleasures. But when we are driving on tour and there is dust and we feel hunger, thirst, and feel sick, then feel as happy as you do now. This is poise. If you do not feel happy - it is not easy to feel happy then (under these conditions) - you are not spiritual in enjoying this swimming, boating etc. I do not mean making a show of being happy, but to really feel happy.

4-One hundred percent poise is essential for spirituality

For one who is not in contact of Sadguru or Avatar the poise is necessary virtue to tread on the path of Spirituality.

Baba said,

For those who are not living here near Me, this poise is 100 % essential for spirituality.

One can achieve poise by practice

Though perfect or absolute poise can only be gained by the grace of Perfect Master or Avatar. One may achieve certain degree of poise by practicing following whether one is atheist and theist both.

(i)  For atheist

  1. One should try to do one’s best but worry not for the result, what it may come; and be ready to accept it, because the result depends on so many factors beyond one’s control.
  2. One must bear in mind that what cannot be cured must be endured, because the loss/damage cannot be reversed.
  3. One must know that there is no benefit of worrying for the things of past or future and things which are not in one’s control.

(ii) For theist

A theist (believer of God) or one who is connected with Sadguru or Avatar is in better position to attain the state of poise. The degree of one’s poise is directly proportional to one’s faith and love for God. One should have undoubted faith in below mentioned truth.

1-God is everything and in everyone. God is doer of everything.

2-Everything happens according to God’s will (even a leaf cannot quiver without His will).

3-What God does is always only good and for our benefit.

4-World and its happenings are nothing but illusion like dream.
