AVATAR  ACTS AND TEACHES ACCORDING EXIGENCIES OF TIME

Avatar teaches masses according to time and their level of understanding which would be most appealing. Essence of teaching is one and the same all time but in a different garb every time. Baba said He has brought the same old wine in a new bottle.

According to Meher Baba.

"The exterior way of living of the Avatar is regulated by the habits and customs of the times, and He adopts that attitude which is most suited to serve as an example to His contemporaries.  But in essence all the Avatars incarnate the same ideal of life.  At the epoch of Mohammed the Arabs were very sensuous and it was not considered bad or illegal to live with several wives.

The Avatars incarnate in this world at different times and their teachings have therefore to be adapted to the mentality of their epoch. At times, the Avatar bases his teaching on the search for the personal God, and at other times, on the search for the impersonal God.

It may be compared to a hospital, where the sick complain of thirst at different times. The doctor will prescribe tea or coffee in the morning to those who complain in the morning, water or fruit juice in the afternoon, buttermilk in the evening and hot milk before sleep. The doctor is the same and the complaint is the same, but the thirst is quenched in different ways according to the different conditions at different times.

God, manifesting as the Avatar in different periods of time, quenches the thirst of man in different ways. All human beings, either consciously or unconsciously, have the same thirst for Truth. (Lord Meher, Bhau Kalchuri, Vol. 6, pp. 1880-1882).

Lord Zoroaster

Zoroaster was the greatest Sufi. He was the Father of Sufism, and its very foundation owes its creation to him."

In 1929, Meher Baba hiked up the hill at Harvan (Kashmir) for seclusion (He said Jesus was buried nearby), He gave this explanation to the mandali with him:

"Zoroaster lived some 6,000 years ago. His Master was a Jew. But what the world knows about the religion that came from him is practically nothing. All these Zoroastrian rites, rituals and ceremonies have come down from the dasturs (priests) and Zoroaster's followers who began them centuries after His death. For example, those emblems of the Zoroastrian religion — the sadra and kusti — are the outcome of the preachings of the dasturs centuries after Zoroaster's advent. It has no connection with his teachings. They are nothing but "after-creations." I am telling you the absolute truth. (Revised Lord Meher, p. 1066)

"At the time of Zoroaster humanity was hesitant and lacked equilibrium.  They were neither complete materialist nor really attracted towards the spiritual light. He taught them to be good householders, to marry and to abstain from desiring the wife of another, and to worship God.  His life was based on this principle:  good thoughts, good words, and good actions. Zoroaster was married.

 Lord Rama

Lord Krishna

At the time of Krishna, the Hindus were at war fighting among them. Envy and greed were predominant, and a real concept of spiritual life and love was unknown to them. Krishna based his spiritual teachings on the laws of love and pure, innocent merriment. Human beings were joyfully directed toward a disinterested ideal of love

Krishna said, “'Act, but do not care for the results. Dedicate them to me.' Why? Because the atmosphere then was full of warring spirits

Lord Buddha

"At the time of Buddha, humanity was deep in materialism.   In order to demonstrate that their conception of values was wrong and that they were victims of the goddess Illusion, or Maya, Buddha renounced his wife, his family, and the riches of the world in order to establish His teachings on sanyas,   or renouncement.

At the time of Buddha, the people of India were deep into materialism. In order to demonstrate that their conception of value was wrong and that they were victims of the goddess of illusion, or Maya, Buddha renounced his wife, his family and the riches of the world in order to establish his teachings on renunciation.

The noble eight-fold path: of Buddha are depicted in symbol of Buddha religion as eight spikes in a circle.

 Right thinking,

 Right intention,

 Right speech,

 Right action,

 Right livelihood,

 Right effort,

 Right mindfulness,

 and Right concentration

JESUS-CHRIST

Jesus also said, 'Act, but in the spirit of sacrifice.'

"As Jesus said," Give up all, and follow me ". The Masters working to detach those in his contact from worldly entanglements is always happening. His inner secret work is incomparable to the work He does openly." (19May1926, Meherabad, LM3 p797).

"If, like Jesus, He had not married and had advocated celibacy, or if He had imposed absolute contingency, it would have produced dangerous and inevitable reactions.  Few people would have followed His teaching and fewer still would have been attracted toward such an ideal. Mohammed had nine wives but He had no physical contact with them; it was legal to have several wives

All miracles are child's play, whereas spirituality is far above them. Miracles in themselves have no spiritual value or significance. But they are necessary, and at times are performed by the Master as a means to convince people of Truth and spirituality. Jesus performed miracles, not for his own gain, but to make people recognize the Truth and to create faith in them. Yet when he was crucified, he who could raise the dead did not stop it. (13 March 1937, Nasik, interview with a Catholic priest, LM6 p2130)

At the time of Jesus, arrogance, imperiousness, pride and cruelty were the characteristics of the people.  Nevertheless they possessed a conception of justice regarding women and marriage; and it was not necessary, as it was in Arabia, to make marriage an example.
At the time of Jesus, arrogance, imperiousness, pride and cruelty were the characteristics of people. Nevertheless, they possessed a conception of justice in regard to women and marriage; therefore, it was not necessary, as it was in Arabia, to make marriage an example. Jesus lived the life of humility, simplicity, and poverty, and he endured suffering in order to direct human beings toward the purest ideal – God as Beloved.

Jesus lived the life of humanity, simplicity and poverty: and He endured suffering in order to direct humanity towards the purest ideal – God.  All the prophets were the incarnation of God; therefore they stand beyond desire and temptations; they were the manifestation of the same divine element.”

Muhammad

At the time of Muhammad, the Arab tribesmen were very sensuous, and it was not considered bad or illegal to live with several wives. If Muhammad had not married like Jesus and had advocated celibacy, or if he had imposed absolute continence, it would have produced inevitably dangerous reactions. Few people would have followed his teachings and fewer still would have been attracted to such an ideal. Muhammad had six wives, but he had no physical contact with them.

Infidels knocked out the teeth of Prophet Muhammad and he did not let out even a single sigh! As Masters, our ways are quite opposite to the ways of the world. We outwardly harass those who love us, and we do nothing to those who despise us. We nourish our enemies and kill our friends! Muhammad was one of us and his teeth were broken by stones. Look at what happened to Jesus – he was crucified. We crush the eyeballs of our lovers underneath our heels and ignore our foes. We mercilessly tyrannize our lovers and even murder them. But no one has the right or the daring to ask u Muhammad said, 'Keep engrossed in action alone. If you act well, you will go to heaven. If you act evil, you will go to hell s why we do it.

MEHER BABA

My explanations are quite, quite different from the scriptures of any religion and they have nothing to do with the shariat aspect of religions. If we find any illumination anywhere in scriptures, it is in the Hindu Shastras and Vedanta. But they too are only a shadow of my explanations.

None of the great Masters in the past has given such explanations as I have. They were great Masters, great Avatars, and they realized so many souls. However, what they gave or left to the world was only shariat — sweet syrup. They only gave internal knowledge (gnosis) to their close disciples who were very, very few. What they said and what was written down into books was only the knowledge and rules of rituals and ceremonies, appealing to the ordinary minds of the time. (The only grave error that the mass of humanity commits is that they take the shariat as the goal of Realization, instead of the way to it.)

While what I give is the explanation of the Knowledge that is beyond the scope of the ordinary intellect to grasp and understand. Even though these explanations are mere shadows of the Real Knowledge, they are beyond mind to follow. What I explain is a subject beyond the comprehension of the mind and (it is given) only to those who are prepared to digest it, not to everybody. For all can neither grasp it nor tolerate it nor even bear to hear it. For example, I say you all are God. Whereas Islam, and all other religions, claim you are servants of God. I say Muhammad was fully-conscious God incarnate, but the Mohammedans say he was only "sent" as a Messenger.

The same is the case with Zoroaster and Christ. I say that all your clapping, bhajan singing, tying the Parsi kusti and praying namaz are merely drills. Only take one name of God; give up anger, lust and greed. This is all that is necessary. But the orthodox section of any religion would blow out my brains if they heard me uttering such words! And I pity them all. Why? Because they are so narrow-minded, so shallow in their vision, and because they do not wish nor try to come out of this state-of-mind. (Lord Meher online edition, pp- 699, August 19, 1926.)

The real goal of life is not the death of the ego but the death of the mind. So when Mohammad or Zoroaster or Jesus talked of being born once or dying once, they meant the death of the mind.

People cannot know that I have to take this human form. Jesus was not known in his time, even by his own intimate companions. Judas, who was near him all the time and even kissed him, could not understand him.”

God has come again and again in various forms has spoken again and again in different words and different languages the Same One Truthbut how many are there that live up to it? Instead of making Truth the vital breath of his life, man compromises by making over and over again a mechanical religion of ita handy staff to lean on in times of adversity, a soothing balm for his conscience or a tradition to be followed. Man's inability to live God's words, makes a mockery of them. How many Christians follow Christ's teaching to 'turn the other cheek' or to 'love thy neighbor as thyself'? How many Muslims follow Mohammed's precept to 'hold God above everything else'? How many Hindus 'bear the torch of righteousness at all cost'? How many Buddhists live the 'life of pure compassion' expounded by Buddha? How many Zoroastrians 'think truly, speak truly, and act truly'? God's Truth cannot be ignored. Because men do ignore It a tremendous adverse reaction is produced, and the world finds itself in a cauldron of suffering through hate, conflicting ideologies and war, and nature's rebellion in the form of floods, famines, earthquakes (Everything and nothing , pp. 74)
