CROSS ROADS OF SOUL’S INNER JOURNEY

Following can be said the cross roads of souls inner journey from God to man and man to God which every soul has to pass through. These are also termed as seven level of understanding.

  1. Instinct- (Evolutionary stages –up to animal life)
  2. Intellect-(Gross plane-human life)
  3. Inspiration-(Gross plane–poets and artists)
  4. Intuition- (Subtle plane -mast/advance souls of 1st to 4th) plane)
  5. Insight- (Mental plane-Mast/advance souls of 5th & 6th plane)
  6. Illumination-(Mental plane- 6th plane soul sees himself)
  7. Realisation- God realised soul / majzoob / Sadguru / Avatar

 1-INSTINCT

There are seven stages of evolution till human form. Instinct relates to six stages of evolution. Unconscious super-soul (God) started manifesting as gas, stone, vegetation, fish, reptile, fish, bird and animal before coming in human form. In evolutionary stages from stone to animal form, though it has all three gross, subtle and mental bodies but except gross, subtle and mental bodies is latent. In these lower forms, faculty of mind is too dormant and movements or actions performed are through instinct (Aantah Prerna) only and souls goes on accumulating all sanskaras of lower form through instinct only.

2-INTELLECT

It relates to soul in human form. In this stage gross, subtle and mental body is developed but soul is fully conscious gross body only. Mind and heart are developed. Intellect is also the faculty of discrimination of understanding between good and bad. It has seat in mind. It makes mind to analyze the action before and after the action is performed. Sometime an intelligent action may bring unfavourable results and may lead to misunderstand the actions. Feelings coming out first of one’s heart when expressed are correct and meaningful.

Baba said:

What one understands by intellect is sometimes true and sometimes not. Human soul like poet whose feelings are more developed and artist draw inspirations

Intellect starts playing its role of discrimination between good and bad. Human soul further goes through following sub-stages

(i). Tuition

In early incarnations of human life, soul gets involved in undesirable bad acts under dominance of animal sanskaras and bears result according to gravity of his misdeeds. Person gets punishment in form of miseries and sufferings for his bad actions. Such souls commit heinous crimes like murder and rape. Normally one’s mind takes over voice of his heart even his heart signals him for his bad act. The result of his bad acts by unfailing and impartial divine law of karma tutors the human soul himself. This tuition is self-tutoring.

Baba’s words:

Tuition is tutoring of mind by external events and comes in piecemeal from assailing false experiences. Tuition thwarts intuition unless it is counter acted by inner awakening.

3-INSPIRATION

Inspiration relates those humans whose feelings are developed like poets and artists. Intuition is for those advanced souls who have conscious visions and understanding true to the point. What you understand by intuition is always true. What you understand by intellect is sometimes true and sometimes not.

 (ii). Faith

Tutoring which first brings faith by mind. It makes one to believe in existence of God. When it comes from heart this is lasting belief in existence of God. There are three sources from faith can get developed in human soul

  1. By hearing or reading discourses on God
  2. By seeing a master, Sadguru or Avatar
  3. By having experience on gross or subtle plane (in dream)

 (iii). Conviction.

Faith which comes from the mind is wavering and temporary. Later it develops and gets connected to heart (feeling) and when it comes from heart it is permanent without scope going back to mind. This is called conviction which is firm and permanent

In Baba’s word:

What one understands by intellect is sometimes true and sometimes not. Human soul like poet whose feelings are more developed and artist draw inspirations.

(iv) Devotion (Bhakti)

Extreme faith in the God, Sadguru Avatar or a master turns into devotion (bhakti).

Devotion (bhakti) is of two kinds.

  1. With desire
  2. Without desire (desireless)

In initial stages the devotion (bhakti) of a human soul is attached with some kind of desire. Further progressing on the path and with the help of Master, Sadguru or Avatar soul develops desireless devotion (Bhakti)

Devotion (bhakti) is of nine types:

  1. By Sharavan (Listening God’s praise)- followed by King Parikshit (Son of Abhimanyu of Mahabharata Era)
  2. By Kirtan (singing verses)-followed by king Sukhdeo
  3. By Sumiran (remembrance)-followed by Bhakta Prahalad
  4. By Seva ( service) –followed by Laxmi wife of Lord Vishnu
  5. By Arti ( reverence)-followed by Prithvi (earth)
  6. By Vandana (prayer)-followed by Akrur (warrior in Pandava’s military and Krishna follower in Mahabharata Era)
  7. By Sakha Bhav (friendship)- followed by Arjuna–disciple of Lord Krishna in Mahabharata Era)
  8. By Sevak (as servant)-followed by Hanuman servant of Lord Ram)
  9. By Samarpan (surrender)–followed by Bali killed by Ram)

Anyone accepting God in any relationship can devotedly revere God (formless) or his master, Sadguru or Avatar (God in person).  This is because God has manifested in every thing and every thing therefore anything can be accepted as God. Even by revering a non-living body or any idol one can progress spiritually. It is accepted in Hindu philosophy and prevalent in Hindu religion. It is easier for human soul to accept and devote a personified Avatar or Sadguru as his master than non living object. One should always keep his master above all masters known to him.

There are 3 stages of Devotion (Bhakti)

The first stage of Bhakti Yoga is elementary, concerns itself with ritualistic worship.

The second stage, which is intermediate, concerns itself with the constant remembrance of God.

The third stage, is advanced, concerns itself with divine love and intense longing for Beloved.

True Bhakti (Devotion)

True bhakti (worship or devotion) does not necessarily mean the observance of religious rites and the muttering of mantras or bhantras. But it certainly means the continual repetition of any one name of God, or the continuous thinking and remembrance of God. To pray to God for material prosperity is not a prayer, but a farce.

Intellect leads human soul to adopt any choice of many spiritual paths and develop many virtues to counter vices of which vast sanskaras are stored in his mental body.  Intellect prompts one to acquire virtues like forbearance, honesty, service, charity, poise, humility, sacrifice and renunciation etc according to individual inclination and destiny. The path of each human soul is different even for husband and wife.

Following are broadly four spiritual paths which are led by intellect are described as under:

To follow the path of the true yogas (karma, dnyan, raj and bhakti) is the remedy for the uprooting of this heritage of evils derived from past impressions, expressed by constant actions and sustained by the continual formation of new ones.

In karma yoga one tries to lose one’s "self" in selfless service for others; in dnyan yoga one tries to lose one's self in contemplation and meditation. In raj yoga one tries to lose one's identity with the individual self and establish identity with the Universal Self by aiming, through constant mental poise and non-attachment, to be in the world and yet not of it. In bhakti yoga one tries to lose one's self in devotion to God. Even in these yogas, only when the zenith is reached can the individuality of the lower self be lost yet consciousness remains. But the easiest and safest way to lose one's self is by completely surrendering to the Perfect Master. (Lord Meher pp. -3464-1954)

One can reach the up to 6th plane on his own through yoga but cannot get God-realization without help of Sadguru or Avatar. Aurobindo Ghosh is an example whom Baba helped to attain 7th plane of God-realisation.

(iv). Love

Extreme desireless devotion turns into love for God, master, Avatar or Sadguru. Love seeks the will of Beloved. Love is a gift from God to man. No one can love God as He is should be loved without gift of God, Sadguru or Avatar. Love means a life of giving without expectation of receiving any reward.

 (v). Obedience

As love deepens, it is transformed into obedience.

Obedience performs the will of Beloved. Disciple follows every word of his Master.

(vi). Surrender

Obedience in higher stage turns into Surrender.

In surrender-Disciple only seeks the happiness of his Master. He who genuinely surrenders to a Perfect Master surrenders completely without asking for permission to do so. He does not even expect acceptance of his surrender from the Master. Complete surrender in itself embodies the acceptance of one who has surrendered completely as he ought to have done. (Lord Meher-pp-330)

To surrender is not as difficult as people think. It must not be external, but internal. You must do your duty toward your dear ones – your wife, children and others who depend on you. You must not shirk or avoid your responsibilities. But while doing these duties, one must not be attached to Maya. (Lord Meher, 1st. ed. Bhau Kalchuri, Vol. 7, p. 2356)

 3-INTUTION

It relates human souls on subtle plane (from 1st to 4th plane).

Baba’s word:

When intuition is from the mind, it is not intuition. Intuition means that which comes from the heart. In the divine path, first there is intuition, then inspiration, then illumination, and finally Realization. (Lord Meher-old Vol. p. 38)

In this stage soul is not conscious of his gross conscious except subtle body. The soul feels himself like fragrance or air. The moment soul enters in first plane of subtle consciousness; he becomes oblivious of his gross body (not like in meditation where soul comes back from subtle to normal consciousness.). This transition from gross to subtle is not reversible as in case of meditation. Such a soul is called mast. The subtle plane superimposes over the gross plane and therefore the surrounding and climate of gross world (plane) does not affect such a soul.

This soul at subtle plane bears wonderful power to perform miracles on gross plane which increases with progress on higher planes up to 4th plane. Such powers to soul on subtle plane are meant to sustain himself from ordeals of gross lanes and concentrate on God for further spiritual progress on higher planes. At the same time there lies great temptation to perform miracles on gross plane unless he is guided by a master, Avatar or Sadguru. Soul on 4th plane, possessed enormous powers on gross plane and can create a separate universe like Vishwamitra of Lord Rama era, tried to create new universe.

4-INSIGHT

Human soul develops insight on mental plane of 5th and 6th plane. In this stage of mental plane, it superimposes over gross and subtle planes both. Therefore, surrounding and experiences of gross plane and subtle plane does not affect the soul on 5th or 6th mental plane. The soul on mental plane has full control over gross and subtle plane and ability to help or perform miracle at all lower planes. The soul experiences himself as thought. He is just like thought and his body can also move like thought. If soul thinks of any particular place in America, His body will be right there by mere thinking.

The soul on 5th plane and 6th planes are called ‘Wali’ and ‘Pir” respectively. A wali can spiritually help his disciple but the presence of disciples is necessary but Pir can do it without presence of his disciple.

Third eye (Divya Drishti) is developed in 6th plane. It has seat in the center of forehead between two eyes. On 6th plane soul, through his third eye sees God everywhere and in every thing. Still soul identifies himself separate from God and has intense longing to unite with God. Union with God to sixth plane soul is bestowed by Sadguru or Avatar at appropriate moment.

Baba explained third eye

When the eyes are turned inward in full consciousness, then this eye (pointing to the center of his forehead) opens, and then only the internal is seen. This is insight. Union is then sought. Now you long for union, but without seeing the One with whom you want to be united. When the eyes turn inward and this eye opens, you see the One you long for, and long still more ardently for union. Turning the eyes inward cannot be done mechanically. It is impossible to do so by exercise. However, it is done in less than a second by the Master. You see the Self. Everything turns different! (Lord Meher, Vol. 6, pp. 2121 – 2123)

6-ILLUMINATION

This stage is connected with advance soul of 6th plane. When the impressions go, then all is wiped out. Mind sees the `l’-this is illumination. When good and bad are written off the mind, mind sees the soul. Mind seeing the soul means you seeing God. But mind does not become you, you being God; mind must merge in the soul. When mind merges in soul, then you are God-realized. Illumination means seeing God as He is. The understanding is divine.

7-REALISATION

This is the 7th plane of consciousness and last cross-road of soul’s inner journey when his search for God is over. A soul of 6th plane develops intense longing to unite with God (like fish out of water). Then a Sadguru or Avatar appears before him and give instant God realisation. He attains God realisation becomes God like His Sadguru (Perfect Master) or Avatar. In state of God realisation, He experiences infinite Knowledge, Power and Bliss. He possesses universal body and mind. Through His universal body, He identifies Himself with every non-living and living bodies of the universe and through universal mind thinks through minds of all beings in the universe. This state of realisation is also termed as Enlightenment. The soul on 7th plane finally gets the answer of His original question “Who am I” as “I am God”. He consciously experiences that He is everything and everyone and whole universe has come out of Him. This is also termed as ‘Liberation’ and soul is called ‘Jeevan Mukta or ‘Mazoob’. Realization is understanding oneself as God.

Baba’s explained

Realization means seeing God as He is. The understanding is divine. Realization understands oneself as God.

The Sadgurus bestow Realisation according to the divine plan chosen by the Avatar. So it is the Avatar who chooses who will become God-realised. It is for the Avatar's own special Circle and lovers and devotees that He himself bestows Realisation or Mukti (Liberation). All other souls receive Realisation or Mukti from the hands of the Sadgurus. Mukti occurs at the moment of death. At Realisation one retains the human body and continues to live.
