SOME TIME INACTION IS BETTER THAN IN UNINTELLIGHT ACTION
Any thought, word and action in process of spending his past sanskaras create new sanskaras.

In case our action is not intelligent analysis of our mind it may create more binding sanskaras that could have been avoided being inactive or not performing it. Charity to a non-eligible recipient or giving alms to a beggar may be a disservice. By doing so, one increases the tendency of beggar and earns bad sanskaras of disservice for self. He may also gain the sanskaras of proundness in to have obliged the person to whom he helped. To achieve in action in every action is only possible with surrenderance of every thought word and action Perfect Master. In helping others one must go by his heart only. Let mind not take over his heart.

Meher Baba explained as under:

That which is looked upon as service by ordinary person might, under special circumstances, be considered as disservice by a Perfect master; He has unerring knowledge of the situation and a deeper grasp of its spiritual demand. The tendency to beg for food as charity creates undesirable sanskaras, and feeding a person who comes to you with this tendency, you may help him to increase the burden of such sanskaras. If you render service in order to oblige a person and if you feel proud of doing it, you not only spiritually harm the recipient of your service but also yourself. If while serving, you take a delight in it and develop pride in doing a good thing, you are getting attached to your act and thereby binding yourself. Hence the way to remain free from karma is to remain completely detached in service.

The value of service depends upon the kind of good secured through it. The kind of well-being that is sought through service will depend upon the vision of the person, and one who has the clearest perception of the final good will be in a position to render the most important and valuable type of service.

All actions and inaction create binding

All actions good or bad, just or unjust, charitable or uncharitable are responsible in making the bond for of illusion firmer and tighter. The goal is to achieve perfect in action, which does not mean merely inactivity. When the self is absent, one achieves inaction in one’s every action. However, the only way to live life of absolute inaction is to completely surrender to a Perfect Master.

In many ways inaction is preferable to unintelligent action, for it has at least the merit of not creating further sanskaras and complication. Even good and righteous action creates sanskaras and means one more addition to the complications created by past actions and experiences.

It is a desperate struggle to undo what has been done under ignorance, to throw away the accumulated burden of the past, to find rescue from the debris left by a series of temporary achievements and failures. Life seeks to unwind the limiting sanskaras of the past and to obtain release from the mazes of its own making, so that its further creations may spring directly from the heart of eternity and bear the stamp of unhampered freedom and intrinsic richness of being which knows no limitation.

Do not absent yourself

This does not mean that you should become inactive. On the contrary it means that you should be constantly alert towards the expressive Beauty of the All-pervading Beloved. On this Hafiz has said,

He who has eyes but does not see,
He who has ears but does not hear,
He who has a tongue but does not speak,
He can see Me as I should be seen
And can know Me as I should be known.

If you want your Beloved to be present, do not absent yourself for one moment from His Presence.

The Perfect Master is in everything, and is the Centre of everything. Everyone and every thing is therefore equidistant from Him. Though, owing to our own limitations, He appears outwardly to be present at only one place at a time, He is on every plane of consciousness at one and the
same time. To see Him as He is, is to see God.

So beware lest when the divine Beloved knocks at the door of your heart He finds you absent. (The Everything and the Nothing-pp-41-1989)

STANDARD OF SPIRITUALITY RELAXED IN KALIYUGA (PRESENT TIME)

With the age, the standard of spirituality (qualifying criteria) is relaxed as quoted in scriptures. In older times the standard of spirituality and morality codes were very high. People were very spiritual and religious. The bad sanskaras were binding if one got a bad thought mere by thinking.

In Satyug, (Earlier to Lord Rama’s era) masses had inclination towards yoga and meditation and it was the recommended path of liberation. In Treta Yuga (Era of Lord Rama) devotion (Bhakti) by performing religious ceremonies and Karma Kand was the path followed to achieve goal of realisation. In Dwapar (Era of Krishna) reverence and adoration of God was the path meant for realisation. In Kal Yuga, the present period, only repeating the name of God and His praise is the easy way to attain the goal of God realisation. (Extracted from Ramayana)

Tulsidas said, “Kaliyuga Keval Nam Adhara, Sumir, Sumir Nar Utarahin Para.”

Nanakji Said, “Nanak Nam Jahaj Hai, Chade So Utre Par.”

Meher Baba said, “Remember Me constantly and wholeheartedly.”

Baba said that mere thinking will not bind one with grave sanskaras unless one translates it into action. In this regard, Baba also said not act if a bad thought comes but must act when a good thought comes to one’s mind.  These sayings of Meher Baba refer the relaxed consideration for any Baba lover or God seeker in present scenario.

Meher Baba said to approach a God realised Sadguru or Avatar and seek His wish/will is necessary to achieve the Goal of God realisation

Meher Baba disregarded the theological ideas, directives of past Avatars and Sadgurus as outdated in following in following words:

“You will not be saved by accepting any theological dogmas or any principles by regarding a prophet who lived hundred or thousand years ego as the only God-incarnate, as only messenger of God. If you want to be saved, conquer your mind, lead a pure life, renounce low desires, and follow one who has realised God and in whom you have sound faith.”

Meher Baba laid emphasis on constant remembrance of a Master (Sadguru) or Avatar and seeks help by surrendering Him. This is one of the easiest, surest and safest ways to reach the goal. He said about Himself that He is like fresh stock and not like an outdated medicine. His effectiveness to help His lovers can be compared with a sitting president than other retired ones.

Baba did not recommend Meditation, Yoga or any kind of physical austerities and relaxed the process so easy for His lovers by trying to remember His name by heart, the best one can do

So let us stick to the formula given by Meher Baba to remember Him by heart leaving all other aside.

SUFFERING BRINGS ONE CLOSER TO GOD

1-What is suffering?
Suffering is also an illusory experience born out of ignorance. Suffering can be considered as result of one’s past bad sanskaras or present bad actions. It is also correct to say it is one’s destiny.
In Baba’s words
Suffering comes through ignorance or attachment to illusions. Most people play with illusions like children play with toys. If you get caught up in the ephemeral things of this world and cling to illusory values, suffering is inevitable. It is not easy for little children to give up their toys, for they become the victims of a habit which they cannot undo. In the same way, through millions of lives, you have got into the habit of playing with illusions. It is difficult for you to get disentangled from them. (Lord Meher, 1st. ed., Bhau Kalchuri, Vol. 11, p. 4236)

2-Physical and mental suffering
One always seeks happiness through success in his efforts or failure of his rivals and dislikes suffering. Suffering can be physical or mental. Mental suffering is more grave than physical. Physical suffering has its impact on mind and it is mind that makes one to feel physically suffering.
In Baba’s words
Mental suffering is worse than physical suffering. What the people of the world with limited vision think of suffering is only physical. They draw pictures of a bomb-stricken person, nose off, arm off, leg off, cetera. Sometimes physical suffering tends to ease mental suffering. The world's idea of suffering and of happiness is entirely limited.

3-Suffering is essential one way
Suffering is also essential because it tends one to seek healing or remedy of one’s suffering by praying God after getting exhausted in finding no permanent healing from his sufferings. Everyone has to suffer for his own Karmas. It is only God or Meher Baba as Avatar suffers for the whole humanity.
In Baba’s words:
"Everything comes, everything goes. But from the spiritual viewpoint, if one bears suffering, it is very good.
“Nobody suffers in vain. Man unknowingly suffers for God (Self realization), and God, God-man knowingly suffers for man (betterment of humanity)” (Lord Meher Vol-3 p-1481)

4-Be brave to accept suffering and accept as gift not as curse
One should try to accept the suffering as gift from God or will of God which provides an opportunity to remember God more intensively than in the days of happiness. One should accept the suffering as brave and boldly not with remorse.
In Baba’s words:
“Even cowards suffer, as do heroes, but there is a great difference between the sufferings of the two. The wounds of the arrows which the brave bear and the worldly arrows that pierce you are as different as earth and sky. Cowards go on being miserable by the arrows of Maya while heroes endure their lot for the love of God." (Lord Meher, 1st. ed. Bhau Kalchuri, Vol. 7, p. 2358)
Suffering is the key note of spiritual life. Avatar and Sadguru never avoid suffering either on own, or their circles, by doing miracles. They suffer themselves and let their circle suffer too. ((4th August 1937, on board the ship Strathnaver, en route from Bombay to Marseilles, Lord Meher pp-2199)

5-Real healing is spiritual Healing
In Baba’s words:
Baba said real healing of suffering is spiritual healing which means if accepted gracefully it leads to permanent happiness.
“Real healing is spiritual healing, whereby the soul, becoming free from desires, doubts and hallucinations, enjoys the eternal bliss of God. “Untimely physical healing might retard the spiritual healing. If borne willingly, physical and mental suffering can make one worthy of receiving spiritual healing. Consider mental and physical suffering as gifts from God, which, if accepted gracefully, lead to everlasting happiness.”
When suffering leads to real eternal happiness we should not attach importance to this suffering. It is to eliminate suffering that suffering has to be. Most of this suffering is unnecessary and self-inflicted. Ninety-nine percent of the world's suffering is self-inflicted. Yet, they ask, "Why must we suffer?" Great suffering means great liberation.

6-Baba’s unique way to alleviate one’s suffering and bring closer to Him
Baba’s ways are unique to help His lovers and alleviate their suffering only to realise them the falseness of physical or mental suffering and to bring closer to love Him more and more.
Meher Baba brings one closer to Him by eliminating one’s sufferings at gross level or subtle experiences (through visions or dream). Once Baba is sure that the His Lover is established in His Love; Baba starts operating His lover by befall of suffering according to one’s capacity which is also for the benefit of His lover and to bring closer to Him. There have been many examples as how Baba brought many mandali and Baba lovers in His fold by fulfillment of their desires or call to test His Avatar-hood? Once they were drawn to Baba with hope or fulfill ment of their material desires, He made them to forget their desire or purpose for which they came to Baba. He made them to realize the real goal of life i.e. to gain God and importance of discipleship of a Perfect Master or Avatar.
An- example- How Baba lover react to suffering and Baba cares for them?.
Ramarao the Guruprasad worker, who had been very ill, expired. The mother came to Baba, but did not shed a tear. The humble woman bravely said she was happy in whatever was Baba's wish. Baba comforted her and assured her that he had bestowed two children on her (one last year and another this year) and taken both souls back to him again. "Now I will bless you with another, but you will keep this one," He said. (Lm-5017-1963)
Another example
The only son of Dina Talati, close disciple of Meher Baba died in England. According to Baba’s instructions Eruch conveyed this news to Dina Talati as not to give shock. Dina remained calm, unaffected with this sad news and did not shed tear. Baba sent few mandali women to Dina to talk and make her weep to outburst her grief to keep her mental balance. But ladies failed to make her weep. Last, Baba came to her and said “Your love for Me makes Me to weep” Then she wept and wept and Baba consoled her.

7-Extreme suffering ends up in God-relisation
Those who are close to God suffer most and extreme suffering ends up in God relisation. Before realisation, longing for God is like fish out of water. Take example of Pleader and Gustadji had to suffer most before God-realisation bestowed by Meher Baba in their Life time.

8-Invite Baba’ grace in suffering
In suffering, invite God’s grace. It one’s attachment with body which makes mind to feel the suffering. If one conceives that one is not body but a soul not attached to body, suffering does not exist for him. But this is very difficult and possible only with the grace of a perfect Master or Avatar.

9-One can enjoy the suffering by Baba’s grace.
A sincere God/Baba lover will never complain for the suffering which he undergoes to others, to Baba or to himself. There are live examples of Baba lovers who willingly never brought their suffering before Meher Baba and accepted as His prasad. However in many cases Baba relieved suffering of His lovers without asking.

In Baba’s words:
Real happiness – is worth all the physical and mental suffering of the universe! Then all suffering becomes as if it were not; it was due to ignorance. Ignorance makes you flinch at the sight of a cockroach; real happiness does not make you feel the teeth of a tiger in your body (Lord Meher, 1st. ed., pp. 3782 – 3783).
You have no idea of that real happiness – is worth all the physical and mental suffering of the universe! Then all suffering becomes as if it were not; it was due to ignorance. Ignorance makes you flinch at the sight of a cockroach; real happiness does not make you feel the teeth of a tiger in your body! (Lord Meher, Bhau Kalchuri, Vol, 7, p. 2317.)

MEHER BABA DARED TO CALL HIMSELF THE AVATAR

Very often, Baba said that I am not this body which is like a coat to be in your midst. My real form is (Virat Swarup) which I had shown to Arjuna when I was Krishna. Some of mandali suggested Baba to delete the word “Avatar” a prefix before His name, many are allergic to this word and few religion and sect do not believe in existence of personified God. Baba replied with a question thrown upon mandali. Baba asked if I say that you are dog, will you accept it? Mandali members said. “No, Baba”. Baba questioned why? They said because we know the difference between the consciousness of ourselves and dog. Baba said, likewise in every sense of word, I consciously know that I am God hence if I do not say that I am not Avatar; it will be biggest hypocrisy for Me. It does not matter for if the people accept Me as Avatar or not.”

There was reason behind it. Baba said, “In present time of materialism, people are so engrossed in the fulfillment of their desires that My clarion call to  “Come onto Me” and My declaration of Avatarhood will fall on their deaf ears and very few will come to Me in My life time.

There is no vanity if one calls himself what really he is. If one is an engineer or doctor, he has not to think even for a second to assert that he is an engineer or a doctor. The moment he thinks to identify himself with another character which he is not for any selfish reason, his heart gives a signal to his mind but his mind takes over his heart due to predominance his past sanskaras. This amounts to inexcusable hypocrisy.

Self Delusion

Baba’s words:

“Imagination of a self deluded man is so strong that he does not doubt he is what he thinks himself to be!  He feels he really is this or that person. This delusion is very positive but it is, after all, delusion. Although these men are not hypocritical, they are dangerous, but not so seriously. Self delusion is unfortunate but hypocrisy is inexcusable. The self-deluded do not know but thinks that he knows. The hypocrite knows that he does not know but pretends that he does.”

A common man with very limited spiritual standing can hardly recognize the spiritual status of God-intoxicated souls, (masts); and take them as mad whereas they are absorbed in love for God at subtle or mental plane of consciousness which superimposes over gross plane and therefore they remain unaffected with the adversities of gross plane. It also beyond capacity of common man to recognize Majzoob (God-realised soul), Sadguru (Man-God) or Avatar (God-man) who are God personified in human form and consciously experience the state of “Aham Brahmasmi” with infinite Knowledge, Power and Bliss.

There is no vanity if a God-realized soul asserts that He is God because He is God in real sense. Such was the instance when Hazrat Babajan after God realisation, asserted herself as “Anal Haq”, (I am God) she was buried alive in Lahore by fanatic soldiers. Later, she appeared in Poona and gave a spiritual kiss to Meher Baba

The contemporary saints, religious leaders of various religion and sects do not claim to have God-realisation and therefore cannot dare to call them God (Bhagwan). Some of their disciples or followers might have used word “Bhagwan” without having come to know the correct definition or characteristics of God with consciousness of “Ahm Brahmasmi”. In life time of Meher Baba there happened to be real episode which is ample proof of highest state of Baba’s divinity over these so called fake Masters. This episode is briefly described as under:

Episode

There was one self-styled false saint named Mirchandani in Bombay with large following. One of staunch followers of Meher Baba, Gulabdas Panchal, his brother Ratilal Panchal and one Mr. Mehta also stayed in Bombay. It was month of February of 1956, and Baba’s birthday was approaching. Baba was in seclusion in that period. Mr. Mehta who was also under influence of Mirchandani suggested to invite Mirchandani as Chief Guest in Baba’s birthday function. Gulabdas ji declined the idea, but on persuasion, agreed to visit Mirchandani’s place and meet him. All attended the gathering of Mirchandani. Mirchandani said to Ratiram that He has direct connection with God and he can show him God. Would he like to be his son? Ratiram inadvertently said yes. Then Mirchandani turned toward Gulabdas and repeated the same question. Gulabdas sternly said “No.” I have my own Guru, Meher Baba. This reply annoyed Mirchandani and he stared Gulabdas and Gulabdas also did the same. Staring continued for few minutes and later Mirchandani stopped staring. All came back. Gulabdas wrote a long letter to Baba asking the significance of this incident.

Baba was in seclusion in Meherabad, He immediately sent Eruch to Bombay to meet Mr. Siganporia, a Baba lover from Bombay and also Mirchandani. Eruch met Baba lovers at the residence of Siganporia (at that time there was no regular Bombay Centre) and wanted to know the reason for Baba lovers visiting other saints. Baba lovers said we are not able to meet Meher Baba for a long time so in order to satisfy our spiritual inquisitiveness, we sometime visit other saints. Eruch explained, because of His Universal work, Baba is in seclusion but shortly He will come out of His seclusion and meet His Lovers. All of us need not go to other saints.

Then Eruch with Gulabdas and few Baba lovers went to Mirchandani’s place. Reaching there Eruch said to Mirchandani; if you can speak one sentence, “I am the Lord of Universe”, I will accept your highness, bow down to you and leave. Mirchandani tried to assert and but finally spoke “Meher Baba is the Lord of Universe”. This was a lesson for Baba lovers and proof of Meher Baba’s highness over so called false saint like Mirchandani.

Meher Baba in His life time told that there are 72 hags of false saints who claim to be Avatar. There was one saint named Krishna who came and remained with Baba for some time. Having left Meherabad he started claiming to be Sadguru as appointed by Meher Baba. He was warned by Baba disciples but he did not stop. Later he got exposed and met tragic end.

Meher Baba also speaks of His Divinity when He asserts that I am the Goal. I am present in all these fake or real saints and the devotee are benefited according to their faith. Other saints tell you the ways and means in form of mantra, Deeksha, meditation or yoga to take his disciples near God- the Goal. I have made the subject matter of God realisation so simple through love and surrender to Me. So when I am the Goal, you all come directly to Me instead try to reach Me though other forms of Mine.

ONENESS IN RELIGIONS AND ITS TENETS (SHARIYAT)

So many religions and sects came into existence with followings of Avatars appeared time to time. They did give the teachings for spiritual upliftment of humanity according to exigencies and circumstances of the time. These teachings accepted as tenets of particular religion after Avatar and Sadguru appear different outwardly but when interpreted in real sense these are one and the same.

Essence of all religions is one. God alone exits, He is everything and in everyone. God unconsciously as man is trying to know Himself as God consciously

Meher Baba said:

There are three languages in which the Avatar teaches: In ordinary language, for the masses who follow the Shariat (custom) and ritual of their religion, so that they can understand:

In language both ordinary and mystical, for the few advanced souls;

In language wholly mystical, for the circle

All these teachings given by the Avatars were according to the exigencies of the times then prevailing.

There were great Masters, great Prophets, and they realized so many souls. However, what they gave or left to the world was only Shariat – sweet syrup. They only gave internal knowledge (gnosis) to their close disciples who were very, very few. What they said and what was written down to make books was only the knowledge and rules of rituals and ceremonies, appealing to the ordinary minds of the time.

Parsee religion and its tenets.

Parsi is the oldest religion of the cycle after Lord Zarathustra

Zaratha said; “I speak to thee in His Holy name, and command thy profound submission to his behest.” The God that sent to me thee has commanded me to bid the all and mankind to resist the power of evil that makes man life a veritable Hell.”

Zarathustra gave the masses Shariat, as in those days they could well understand good thoughts, good words and good deeds. He did not say in clear words: "Act and don't care about the result" – since they would not have been able to accept it. So Zarathustra said the same thing, but in a different way.

Judaism religion and its tenets

Judaism religion formed after Lord Abhram and symbol of Judaism with two triangles and six corners appear on logo of Mastery in Servitude” in second order.  He was Second Advent of Avatar after Lord Zoroaster. He is also called as second Zoroaster.

Hindu religion and its tenets.

Rama said, “Vishnu, to save His people, will be born on the earth to slay the demons. He will descend to the world, embodying Himself as Sri Rama. Rama will show mortals how to live by truth. Sinners will be cleaned of their sins when they take there name of Rama. (Ramayana)

Krishna said,” By me all this world is pervaded in my manifested aspect: all beings have root in Me. I am not rooted in them. The foolish disregard me, when clad in human semblance, ignorant of my supreme nature.  (Song celestial Bhagwat Gita)

Krishna said: "Act, but do not care for the results. Dedicate them to Me." – Why? Because the atmosphere then was full of warring spirits.

Hinduism is one of the best religions in terms of tenets. Baba has confirmed all tenets of Hindu religion even disposal of dead body after death by fire where it goes back to five elements of earth, fire, water, air and Akash. Hindu religion believes in incarnations in Human life, Formless God and Personified God (easier to accept), prayer and reverence of God in Karm-kand-Bhakti, Yoga & Dhyan marg. Hinduism is most liberal and allows reverence of any living master or even non-living bodies as God which is also a lower form of God manifestation. It is therefore so many sects and Panths have come up in existence after Perfect Master like   ten Perfect Masters in Sikhism, Jainism after lord Mahavira and  many so many  saints and gurus of lower status like Osho who do not claim to be Prefect Master.

Buddha religion and its tenets.

Buddha said, “Having reached the shore myself, I carry others to the shore, being free I make them free, being comforted I comfort; being perfectly at rest, I lead others to rest. By My perfect wisdom I know both this world and the next such as they really are, I am all knowing, all seeing. Come to Me.” (The lotus of the true law)

The following teachings are commonly seen as essential to Buddhism.

The Four Noble Truths: that suffering is an ingrained part of existence; that the origin of suffering is craving for sensuality, acquisition of identity, and fear of annihilation; that suffering can be ended. And that following the Noble Eightfold Path is the means to accomplish this:

The Noble Eightfold Path: right thinking, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration are depicted in symbol of Buddha religion as eight spikes in a circle.

Christian religion and its tenets.

This religion came with following of Lord Jesus called Christ.

Christ said, “I am light of the world, he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. To his end I was born, and for this cause came I into, that I should bear the witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me through he were dead yet shall he live and who so ever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.

Baba said about Christ

If Jesus said that God is in heaven, then he was not the Christ. But I know that he was perfect and divine, God-incarnate, and never meant that.

To the multitude he said, "God is in heaven; try to go there," and to reach that end He said to overcome certain temptations and sufferings.

To his followers he said, "God is everywhere; try to see Him." and gave explanations to that effect.

To the close circle of apostles he said, "God is in Me and in you too," and actually revealed this to them.

Jesus also said: "Act, but in the spirit of sacrifice."

Owing to the time and the persons, according to their readiness to listen and understand. What Jesus meant was to leave all and follow Him; that means to know Him, see Him, and experience Him.

The teachings that are being followed by Christians are not the real teachings that Christ gave. The priests have altered His words, added to His teachings and spoiled them

Christian tenets do not believe in existence of personified God and reincarnation. God has infinite Power, Knowledge and Bliss and nothing is impossible for God, then God can be with form and without form also. To Limit God without form would be to undermine God. When Christians accept Bible saying Christ as messenger of God but also accept His words as Christ said “I am son of My father and I and My father is One.” This is clearly and correctly interpreted that Christ Himself was God incarnate.  He said so as messenger of God to be followed by the masses who had that level of acceptance only.

Islam religion and its tenets:

Islam religion which came into force by the followers of Muhammad.

Muhammad said, “Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and Seal of Prophets; and Allah is aware of all things.

All those believe me and do good works and believe in that which is revealed unto Muhammad-and it the truth from their Lord –he riddeth them of their ill-deeds and improveth their state.

Some of the sayings of Mohammad has been interpreted most wrong fully by Maulavi’s and Imams who are responsible for the fanatic and orthodox belief in Mohammdans.

Muhammad said who do not have faith in Me are infidel, but it did not mean that all others who had faith in Sadguru or Avatar than Him are infidel. Mohammdans went by wordy interpretation that who does not believe in Muhammad are infidels and do not recognize other religion at par with Islam.

Mohammdan took the sacrifice of Abhram a disciple of Lord Mohammad killing his son, Isaac, a rare sacrifice in obedience to his Master Muhammad as killing of a goat only. Though Abhram killed his son but it turned out to be goat by the grace Lord Muhammad as reward to his disciple. Mohammdans misguidedly take it as custom and kill goat as sacrifice parallel to Abraham and relish animal food. This is most undesirable. This is no way sacrifice but deliberate violence adverse from spiritual point of view.

Baba remarked custom of Bakrid

In regard to Muslim custom of slaughtering a goat on this day, Baba conveyed, "They feel that if the Prophet killed a goat on this day, they should do it, too. They should try to kill their minds instead of goats! What is the use of slaughtering defenseless animals?"

Islam does not believe in reincarnation in human-life. This is also a literal interpretation Muhammad’s word. When Muhammad said that dead will rise from their graves on the day of Kayamat (Mahapralaya or dissolution of universe) and they will have to give the account of their misdeeds. He meant of one real birth (when soul was first separated from Oversoul-God) and real and final death (when soul is gets realisation, finally get awakened as God Himself

Real Birth and Real Death

There is one real birth and one real death. You are born once, and you really die only once.

What is real birth? It is the birth of a "drop" in the Ocean of Reality. What is meant by it? It is the advent of individuality, born of indivisibility through a glimmer of the first most-finite consciousness, which transfixed cognizance of limitation into the Unlimited.

What is meant by real death? It is consciousness getting free of all limitations. Freedom from all limitations is real death. It is really the death of all limitations. In between the real birth and the real death, there is no such reality as the so-called births and deaths.

What really happens in the intermediate stage known as births and deaths is that the limitations of consciousness gradually wear off until consciousness is free of all limitations. Ultimately, consciousness totally free of all limitations experiences the Unlimited Reality eternally. Real dying is equal to real living. Therefore I stress: "Die for God and you will live as God."

Baba further commented:

You are first a child, then grow old and drop the body, but you never die and were never born. In the East, Vedantists believe in reincarnation, in numberless births and deaths until one attains God. The Muslims believe in one birth only and in one death only. The Christians and the Zoroastrians believe the same. All are right. But Zarathustra, Ram, Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad and all previous Avatars meant what I mean by real birth and real death. I say: "You are born once and die once." (Lord Meher, 1st. ed., Bhau Kalchuri, Vol. 15, pp. 5426 – 5428)

Muhammad said: "Keep engrossed in action alone. If you act well, you will go to heaven; if you act evil, you will go to hell."

Muhammad said about Hell and heaven in above words. He created His (God’s) fear among His followers that souls with good or bad acts they will be sent hell as punishment and haven as reward. This is also a misconception among all religions. Hell and heavens are considered as places or destination where soul after physical death gets punishment or reward for his bad or good acts of his previous life. Baba revealed that heaven and hell are not the places but the state of mind after a soul drops his physical body. A soul normally remains in astral body (without body) minimum for four days (very good soul) and maximum 13 days (for any other soul not so good) except exceptions where one commits suicide or gets executed. In this state without body, soul introspects and experiences or feels good or bad acts of his previous life in proportion within short time of 4 to 13 days. If there is predominance of good acts of his previous life, the soul experiences happiness (heaven state) and if bad acts dominate, soul experiences misery (hell state). Since the time span in hell or heaven state (between 4 to 13 days) is very short compared to acts performed in his previous life which may range more than 100 or even less, therefore  for intensity of agony or suffering of soul without body is many times more.

It therefore, Karm-kand-the death ceremony-Chautha or Terhavi are performed on 4th day or maximum 13 days after death for the reason that dead person takes rebirth in new body after going through heaven and hell state. Any rituals performed after 13 days of death of a person is meaning-less since soul has incarnated in new life in new body.

Meher Baba said

Meher Baba said that He is above all religions” He belong to no religions, all religion belonged to Me.

Baba said, “Age after age, I come amidst mankind to maintain my own creation of illusion, thereby also awakening humanity to become aware of it. My advent is not to destroy illusion because as it is, it is absolute nothing. I come and make you aware of nothingness of illusion through you.  I automatically maintain illusion which is nothing but shadow of my infinite Self and through me, you automatically discard illusion when you are made aware of its falseness.

Baba did attach importance to rites and rituals but the company of Perfect Master or Avatar. It is clear from His following sayings.

“Established codes of religion and morality to the mankind are as general advice given by father to son. They are for its wellbeing, but when one may have the advantage of loving wisdom; it should be accepted in preference to these established codes. This may be done without coming to harm, but with much benefit.”

Most of so called religious ceremonies performed by the Parsees, the Hindus and followers of other creeds are unnecessary and worthless. For these useless ceremonies, it is the avaricious and worldly priests are responsible. Prophets, Sadgurus and saints are not bound by them.

Directive

"To obey Me is the best religious act you can perform, and by doing so you will free yourself from all the bondages of the customs and rites of religion."

ONE SHOULD NOT EVEN DESIRE FOR GOD-REALIZATION- IT IS DESTINED

There can be no better simile of man (false self, small i-ego) and God (Real Self, big I) with the appearance of a snake in the rope in darkness. Just like snake, (false self-small i) is also nothing but illusion. Hence biting of snake or getting killed by snake is meaningless, since snake being illusion, cannot bite, kill, or can be killed.

Similarly, the liberation of the false self (small i-ego) is also meaningless, since false self (small i-ego) is itself an illusion like snake for rope.  The Real Self (big I) has never been bound with anything and so does not need liberation.

In fact, our false self (small i-ego), which falsely identifies itself as a snake instead of rope has to consciously know that its Real Self is rope (God-big I) which is already liberated. Real Self (God-big -I) is the supreme soul and enjoys infinite power, infinite knowledge and infinite bliss.

False self (small i-ego), sooner or later is bound to gain the conscious knowledge that it is not the snake but the rope (Real Self-big-I) which is the state of God realization and comes at appropriate and predestined time only with the help of a Perfect Master or Avatar. Anyone (false self i) cannot ask or demand for God realization in lieu of any austerities/practices/services except by love, obedience and surrenderence to a Perfect Master or Avatar.

Thus, it can be concluded that one should not desire even for God realization or liberation because everyone is already destined for it at appointed time. One should only aspire and long for the sublimation of one’s ego (false self, i) so that one’s Real Self (Big I) can be recognized and it is possible only by loving God more and more for descent of His grace.

ONLY INTELLECTUAL APPROACH TOWARDS LIFE MAY LEAD TO CONFUSION

Heart and mind are not to be understood as only biological organs of human body but these are source and seat of feeling and thought. Baba defined Heart and Mind as under:

Thought at rest and feeling at work is Heart,

Feeling at rest and thought at work is mind.

Mind is like store-house for our sanskaras-the impressions of our thought, word and action and all unspent or accumulated impressions are carried forward by a soul in his next birth. Intellect or intelligence fully developed in human form makes one to discriminate between good and bad and helps to reform one life after life.

Meher Baba did not discard the intellectual approach or reading of literature on spirituality. He advised many of His lovers to read God Speaks and Discourses. According to Baba Intellectual exercises can only give one an intellectual understanding of the path but it is not real understanding. To tread further on path one has to develop love, obedience and surrender to God and seek help of a Perfect Master.

Baba’s word,

“It is not through intellectual exercises and such learning, or knowledge acquired by reading or hearing lectures, that spiritual truth can be understood. At the most, these can give one an intellectual understanding, which is the first preparatory stage for ushering one into the Path. One can by reading books and having theories, get some intellectual understanding of the Truth, but that is not real understanding. One must experience truth, live truth, realize truth. It is very easy to do this if one takes it to mind. But the people make it complicated that it seems a gigantic task.”

Only pure philosophical approach one’s life may result in inactiveness and miserable situation. If one starts analyzing one’s thought, word and action philosophically to be good to act or bad –not to act, he may not reach to any definite conclusion. For example-Baba has explained that a service or help to others without understanding would be disservice and in doing so one increases the burden of sanskaras of the person to whom one is serving and to himself also for disservice if the person is not deserving.

In another, aspect of violence, killing of living bodies of lower forms like ants, Insects even microorganism is not desirable from spiritual point of view as they create bad and binding sanskaras. In Jain sect, one is required to protect himself from killing of microorganisms even unconsciously while breathing and eating; for reason they put band of clothing over their mouth and nostrils. One does not know how many ants insects are killed while walking and moving around. Many microorganisms and bacteria’s are consumed by one in eating and drinking. If one sticks literally the principle of non-violence, it would not be easy or comfortable for one to eat, drink or even move around. One may not help other by any act which may appear as act of violence but considering the circumstance it may not fall in category of violence. One will become inactive and life becomes miserable to some extent. A doctor may not perform surgical treatment on patient.  One will not fight and die for his country being afraid of violent act in killing of aggressor. A  swimmer may not come forward to save the drowning person being afraid of acting violent.

There is solution from Baba for everything. According to Baba, God listens to the voice of heart. First feeling or thought which comes to one’s mind in any situation is the voice of heart. One must act according to voice of heart. After voice of heart is heard, one’s mind takes over immediately and mind acts analytically.

Baba has defined the non-violence in very appealing manner. According to Meher Baba violence in many situations is non-violence in real sense. Above all Baba says, if one remembers or associates Me with any act with or without using intellect, I will protect him from bad sanskaras and will help to progress on the path of spirituality

Following lines of Meher Baba is real boost for intellectuals who know or want to know more about Meher Baba.

A person may be very intelligent, but if he has not the fortune to have the company of a Sadguru, he will not get Self-Realization. On the other hand a person, though dull, who has that rare fortune to have the company of a Perfect Master can have Self-Realization. And I myself will bow down to such a person who is fortunate enough to be very intelligent and, at the same time, who has love for and the company of a Perfect Master.

OBEDIENCE IS DIFFICULT BUT ONE MUST TRY

Thought of obedience to Master enters as love for Master has reached to its height. Baba has defined love for Master or God as devotion (Bhakti) without desire.

Following are the pearls in form of quotes given by Meher Baba which amplifies the subject of obedience, its importance and what should be our approach to achieve it.

“The beginning of real love is obedience, and the highest aspect of this love which surpasses that of love itself, is the aspect which culminates into the perfect obedience  or supreme resignation to the will and wish of the Beloved ( God).”

“Obedience to Master is greater than Love. Obedience seeks pleasure of the Beloved.”

“Obedience is greater than all spiritual experiences but for show of love is worse than no obedience.”

“Obedience is a gift from Master to man. Only intense love for Me can bring you to obey Me as I want.”

“Obedience is more important than devotion even if it is done unwillingly, because gradually, in the process, duality vanishes. When you do what the Master says responsibility falls on Him whom you obey, even when you obey unwillingly.”

“Obedience must be unquestioning. Only then it is of highest order. But it is impossible.”

“Even after coming in contact with a Perfect Master, it is very difficult to obey Him. Suppose you believe Me to be the Perfect One and while obeying Me, even if you have a passing thought doubting My perfection, it would not be perfect obedience.”

“There are a few among the purely intellectual who can establish a life of obedience to a Perfect Master, and fewer still who can maintain it.”

Better you do not ask Me and if you ask Me, do as I say. If you do not want to obey Me, Do not ask Me.”

“To receive My grace, you must obey Me, whole-heartedly with firm foundation of unshaken faith in Me.”

Baba endorsed the following lines of Hafiz Perfect Master

“Be a befitting and fortunate slave. Carry out every command of Master without any question of why and what. About what you hear from the Master, never say it is wrong because the fault lies in your incapacity to understand. What My Master does is of the highest good to all concerned.”

“Carry out every word of the Master. Do not feel disgusted or depressed, with the result of outcome of any work, however negative it may appear, or feel upset about any taunt of the Master.”

Baba revealed four types of obedience

  1. Obedience of soldiers – From patriotic motives for one's country, if commander orders "Shoot!", the bullet is fired by the soldier without giving a second thought. Like the old saying, "Theirs is not to reason why, theirs is but to do or die."
  2. Obedience of a paid servant- The more and the quicker his pay, the greater is his "Yes sir," to his employer.
  3. Obedience of a slave in bondage- His is compulsory obedience. We have heard that in olden days when slaves were bought and sold, theirs was a miserable life. They did their work because they were lashed and because they had no other recourse but to obey under compulsion.
  4. Obedience of a lover- This is the real type of obedience. His is the willing obedience – no fees or consideration, no expectation of return or reward, but love alone.

Willing obedience is the real type of obedience inspired by wholehearted love. Even in this last type of obedience though, there are different stages:

In the first stage the lover uses his common sense and discrimination in obeying. In his discrimination, he has modified the original order in his own interest. This is one stage of willing obedience.

The second stage is characterized by literal obedience. It is like taking a bitter medicine – "Castor oil obedience." one does not use his common sense or discrimination. He obeys but without relishing it.

In the third stage the lover seeks the pleasure of the Master. In order to please Me, and feels quite happy and cheerful, and does it wholeheartedly. He is pleased in doing so and feels satisfied because he has thereby pleased Me. I call this type of obedience "Complete obedience for the pleasure of the Beloved."

Another type of obedience is the state of absolute obedience. It is different from the other types. None except the advanced souls on the path can give such obedience to the Master. Those on the fifth and sixth planes alone can give such obedience to the Master. It is like Kalyan disciple of Ramdas who did see night in day time when His Master asked him to bring lantern.

There is no scope of compromise in love and obedience.

“There can be no compromise in love. One cannot love the world, and also e God. Worldly man has to compromise, but in regard to obedience to Me, there can be no compromise according to the way of the world.

Obedience is very difficult.

Baba said My orders are not like orders of a commander like shoot at sight but at least one must try to obey. In Baba’s words:

It is important to obey Me cheerfully. If that is not possible, at least try to obey.

Everything is the play of the mind. If I wish, I could make the harmonium start playing itself. People would take Me for God and would be ready to surrender themselves to Me. But this would not be dedication to Me, but to the playing of the harmonium. If a dead child is made alive, people are ready to obey – but this obedience would be to resurrecting the child.

You all somehow feel that I am someone really great, but you have no conscious experience. There will not be greatness in your obedience after knowing Me. But it is really great to obey Me when not knowing My True Self. Mind will revolt against such obedience.

But obedience without consciously knowing Me will make you greater than Me. Whatever I say, I say in all sincerity. It is impossible to obey Me literally. Were I in your place, it would be difficult for Me to obey. So, what should I say about obeying Me without knowing My Real State?

Obedience should not be mechanical

Baba’s words:

It is the means we are given to express our love, the means by which you “Obedience is a gift from Master to man."  It is the means we are given to express our love, the means by which our love may be tested and strengthened.

Obedience to the Master's will should not be mechanical, because it will then be monotonous, dry and uninteresting. Not only should it not be mechanical, but no thought of self at all, even for a second, should be there.

If you are always conscious of keeping the Master's will, and the consciousness is not disturbed by the slightest thought, then it is not mechanical. But this is impossible without the grace of the Perfect Master. Even to understand that the Master's pleasure is your pleasure is impossible. But if you always have this steadfast thought that the Perfect Master's will is your pleasure, then it is not mechanical. (Lord Meher-3330-1953)

Obedience is difficult but not impossible which necessarily requires grace of the Master. Baba said you can not obey Me without My wish because the obedience is a gift from Master to His disciple. Baba demanded implicit obedience from His disciples. There have been real time incidents when close disciples left, half shaved or even half dressed to attend call from Baba and slight delay was marked as disobedience. In implicit and whole hearted obedience mind does not get time to react or express itself and this tend to result in forgetfulness, egoless-ness and further leads to surrenderance.

Meher Baba is not His physical body in our midst, but He is available on consciousness of all subtle and mental planes. One can experience His presence through his love and surrenderance. Easiest way is to follow His wish and revere Him by repeating “Parvardigar and Repentance prayer”.

Thought of obedience to Master comes into play after love for Master has developed and reached to its height. Baba has defined love for Master or God as devotion (Bhakti) without desire.  Meher Baba explained the above stages of obedience through an example of an order passed on Ram Chandra Gadekar.

According  to Meher Baba is no scope of compromise in love and obedience.

“There can be no compromise in love. One cannot love the world, and also e God. Worldly man has to compromise, but in regard to obedience to Me, there can be no compromise according to the way of the world.

GOD IS THE REAL DOER

Baba has said that “Only God exists and all else is illusion”. It means that we do not exist. Our existence in the form of i (ego) is nothing but an illusion like existence of snake in rope in the darkness. Although snake does not exist but it appears as an illusion. Similarly our false selves (ego) also really do not exist but appears as an illusion.

Since God is the real existence, it means that God is the Real Doer also because there is no body other than God and except God everything is illusion.  Moreover, we can not be the doer because we (i, ego) really do not exist as our existence is only illusory like snake in the rope. Just like an illusory snake in the rope can not do anything, neither move nor bite, we (our illusory i, ego) also can not do anything. Although we are not doer but we have illusory feeling that we are doing, simply because of existence of our false self (i, ego). This is like a child sitting in the lap of his father and holding the steering of a car driven by his father. The child falsely thinks that it is he who is driving the car, whereas the truth is that real driver is his father.

Whole world is God’s dream. In the God’s dream (world), God Himself is all the things of the dream, living as well as non-living. Since all the things of God’s dream are God Himself, it means we all are also God, though not aware of our Real Selves (I). It is infinite God who Himself is all the objects of His dream world and so obviously the Real Doer also. Being not aware of our Real selves (I, God) we have developed false selves (i, ego) and subsequently consider ourselves as the doer.  In fact God is the Real Doer.

According to Vedanta and Hindu scriptures, our gross body is formed by five mahabhoots viz. aakash, vayu, tej, jal and prithvi and subtle body is formed by the interactions of five mahabhoots and three gunas viz. satvaguna, rajoguna and rajoguna. The five mahabhoots and three gunas have originated from their ultimate source, the pure consciousness i.e. God. The actions or karma done by the gross and subtle bodies are in fact done by the nature and play of the three gunas. However, due to the illusory i (ego), we give the credit to ourselves (i, ego) and we think that we are doing everything. In Srimad Bhagavad Geeta (chapter 5, verse 14) Lord Krishna says that God does not create the sense of doer-ship (i, ego) of the people, and He neither induce people to act and nor does He create the fruits of actions (karmas). All these things are enacted by the modes of material nature and the play of the three gunas. This means that our i (ego) or our sense of doer-ship and so called karmas are nothing but illusion. The truth is that only God is the Real Existence and the Real Doer, all else are nothing but illusion.

From the above explanations it can be easily understood that why it is generally said that “Ishwar ki marji ke bina ek patta bhi nahin hilta” meaning that God is the real doer.

DISTINCTIONS OF AVATAR MEHER BABA

Baba said that He is Avatar. He is simultaneously God and man. He eats, drinks walks and sleeps like man and also falls sick but at the same time He bears infinite Power (strength), infinite Knowledge and infinite Bliss. Baba only used His infinite knowledge to influence His lovers and humour to relax His body in undertaking universal suffering of mankind. Baba had different traits, liking for food, games and humour. He had divine strength which He displayed to His close disciples which proved His divinity like Lord Krishna displayed to Arjuna and His Mother Yashoda.

A brief description of Meher Baba’s distinctions is written below:

  1. Food habits

Baba was vegetarian. Normally He used to take rice and dal. He asked His school boys mandali to take vegetarian food only. Even on His relatives, Baba prevailed upon them to cook veg food. He did not allow His mother who was diabetic, to eat fish in His ashram at Satara. But He did not restrict His Muslim mandali to take non-veg food. In New Life also Baba allowed to beg food of any kind.  During tours abroad, Baba permitted even Hindu mandali members to take non-veg food to bear cold climatic conditions. Sometimes, on ceremonial occasions, Baba allowed non-veg food and drinks on request of His lovers. He also allowed non-veg food on medical grounds. He ordered Sheela Kalchuri to take fish and meat for her medical treatment; but Baba for His treatment, when asked by doctors to take meat soup He did not accept. He recommended vegetarian food for His lovers and spiritual aspirants/seekers, since it does not carry animal sanskaras of lust and anger which begin to develop in animal life. Baba said that Veg or non-veg eater should never look upon themselves as superior or inferior compared to each other.

  1. Caution for Backbiting

Baba was averse to backbiting, slander and criticism. Baba said backbiting and slander is most disastrous. Baba allowed healthy criticism without any self interest. He did not object His criticism by His relative Col. M.S. Irani and even did not allow mandali to refute it. He forbade His lovers from criticism and not to desist others from their criticism as such persons reduce our burden of sanskaras and deceive themselves only. Backbiters indeed are friend.

Baba said, “Innocent and fair criticism does not hurt and is good, but it is quite rare. What I mean by talking ill of others is when you criticize and it hurts. It hurts when you are excited, out of anger. When you criticize with love and kindness, how can it heart? If you point out the shortcoming of others lovingly, without any feeling of hate or animosity, it is all right. Even arguing with love is permitted.”

  1. Sense of Humour

Baba had great sense of humour. He said after His God-realisation, He gave away everything except the sense of humour. Humour on His part with mandali and Baba lovers was not insulting or superfluous but carried spiritual messages in an interesting manner.  There are many episodes are written in Lord Meher in order of chronology. Humorous episodes have also been compiled and published in two volumes titled “Divine Sense of Humour of Avatar Meher Baba” by B. Kumar on behalf of AMB centre Delhi.

  1. Health conscious.

Baba was health conscious for self but more for His school boys, mandali and Baba lovers. He often took soda water instead of plain water. Even His water glass has to be kept covered by mandali engaged in His service. Once He found water pitcher in school at Meherabad uncovered, Baba started beating all teachers by stick. On the other side He did not care for this aspect while accepting anything from God intoxicated masts who offered to Him out of their love. In one incident Baba ate rotten rice offered by mast out of His love like Lord Ram ate ber (a kind of fruit found in Jungle) of Shabri. (Worldly surrounding, worst to worst cannot affect a mast on subtle or mental plane since subtle plane superimposes over gross plane and mental plane over gross and subtle both) So, what to say about Meher Baba who is present on every plane of consciousness?

  1. Compassion

Baba was most compassionate true to His name (Meher) beyond our imagination. Baba’s compassion can still be felt if one is sincere in one’s love for Him. He was most generous and helped to many mandali members, Baba lovers and visitors in their personal and financial matters, even to sinners.

In one instance, Baba helped a retired police inspector who developed leprosy and helpless to solemn the marriage of his young daughter. Before coming to Baba, he had approached many charitable and social organizations and even Gandhi but failed.  Baba not only helped him financially by Rs 10000/- but also attended marriage ceremony of his daughter along with few mandali members.

Baba was most compassionate to poor, mad and Mast. He washed, bathed, fed and gave rupee and clothing’s in his ashram,  when contacted them in remote places of their stay, Bestowing His love, grace Baba gave spiritual push to the advance souls out of His compassion which was important phase of His Avataric activities.

Out of His compassion Baba, transformed dreaded criminal of Maharashtra, Satyamang compared to Balmiki of Ram era. He said, saints are My assets and sinners My liabilities. He also said that He is the supreme Judge who bring out to convicts but instead to punish He forgive them.

On the other side He was very hard to foul player. He said that He is like fire; fire dispels cold, and cooks your food but if you try play with it, it will burn you to ashes. He was most cruel to few mandali out of His compassion to lead them spiritually toward liberation and to few Baba gave liberation at the time of death or after that.

Few of mandali members, at one point of time were so disheartened by treatment of Meher Baba that they tried to commit suicide but out of His compassion every time Baba saved them miraculously.

  1. Punctuality

Baba was punctual also. Some time He came to mandali hall before appointed time. He always laid emphasis on punctuality to His mandali and others to be punctual and severely reprimanded late comers. It is time only that matters. You cannot repay back anything when you are helped by someone because it is the time that counts and that time cannot be rolled back.

One of episode reveals its importance attached to it by Meher Baba. Pratap was continually late in performances with the Poona bhajan group, but when he was late yet again, Baba expressed his disapproval, remarking, “You should be cut to pieces with a blunt knife! Why a blunt knife? If the knife were sharp it would cut easily and you would not suffer much. But if the knife were blunt, it would cause great pain. ((Lord Meher-new volume-p-5566)

  1. Fulfillment of Promise

Baba always kept His promise. Baba said I will never let you down. Promise is a kind of self obedience to oneself.

Baba said, “A person should always act as per his promise. Don’t make false promises. First, think twice before give a promise but once you make it, keep it up at any price. If a promise made is not kept up. It is the height of hypocrisy. Never break a promise.”

In rare example of fulfillment of His promise and control over was displayed by  Baba  When Baba did not beat His disciple Dhakephalkar while beating all other school teachers in rage because Baba had promised Dhakephalkar not to beat him any time before appointing Him teacher in His school in Meherabad. Baba went into fit of anger when he found the water pitcher uncovered meant to contain drinking water for school children.

  1. Obedience

Baba was very particular and strict in obedience of His order. He expected implicit obedience from His mandali. He cautioned His mandali to beware of ego.  To remove the ego impression of few of His mandali anyone who reflected his ego or boasted before Him, Baba brought them down to earth and made them to realize their folly and apologize. There are many real life time episodes of mandali who were made to obey Baba under very unfavorable circumstances created by Baba.

  1. No importance to money

Baba gave no importance to money. He did not handle money and touched only while distributing as prasad to poor and destitute or on His mast work. Once during 40’s Baba got burnt the currency notes of Rs.5000 (worth 1000 dollars at that time) brought by one of His mandali from Bombay who did not obey His order to come back by certain date. Baba also said money should not be a consideration for My work. If someone feels that money is  hindrance in carrying work for Baba, he should better stop the work.

Baba said on spending of money, “It entirely depends upon the way in which we use money, whether it is good or bad. Money earned and utilized as means of livelihood for oneself and those who depend on one is good. Given as charity for the benefit of humanity, it is better. But to give anonymously and yet carefully for intelligent service and spiritual upliftment of humanity, without dictating as to how it shall be administered or spent is the best use of money. But very, very few selfless souls can do it.

When money, gained by fair means or foul, is spent in order to gratify one’s desire for pleasure and enjoyment, it makes the spender pleasure-loving and selfish. And if the same person suddenly looses that money, he naturally feels miserable and curses life and his fate. Worst still is it when he wastes money earned or inherited, in speculation and gambling, or wine and women.

  1. Law abiding

Baba was law abiding though His will (destiny) is law and His wish (directives) governs the universe. Once three persons riding on a bicycle caught by traffic police but let out and reached Guruprasad. Baba reprimanded them for not following the law of land. In another episode Eruch, driving car with Baba caused a fatal accident. Eruch was released by court but his driving licence was cancelled. Later, Baba never allowed Eruch to drive His car.

  1. Condemned Hypocrisy

Baba was dead against Hypocrisy. Baba said hypocrisy is inexcusable. Any kind of sin can be forgiven but hypocrisy cannot. Hypocrisy is to consciously pretend which you are not. Before Baba no hypocrite could ever stand. One of false saint Mirchandani claimed to be God, Baba directed Eruch to meet Mirchandani. Eruch asked Mirchandani to utter that He is Lord of Universe. He tried but instead of his name he pronounced “Meher Baba is the Lord of Universe”.

  1. Hobbies

Baba had great love for games. He played cricket in His boyhood and other games. He was team leader in His school days. Later years, after He started Avataric activities, He watched Cricket test match. He used to play cricket, cards and atya-patya (A game of tiles) with mandali to relieve Himself from the physical strain of His Universal work. Nari Contractor and Polly Omrigar, test players had blessings of Maher Baba. Nari contractor a test player was made the captain during the play and won the test match on a foreign land. A small act done by Avatar or Sadguru has the universal effect. Now, one can guess it from world wide popularity of cricket compared to any other game

Meher Baba loved devotional music particularly ghazals. He used to listen Bhajans and ghazals in darshan programs. Once Meher Baba listened one most favorite Ghazal of Seemab and was so elated that He said to have liberated him. He invited famous ghazal singer Begam Akhtar in sixties when she demanded handsome amount with overheads as remuneration. Baba rejected her demand. Later she was internally initiated by Baba; came to sing before Baba and sought blessings. She voluntarily performed in Hamirpur in the inaugural ceremony of Meherpuri in 1963.

  1. Divine strength

Baba had divine physical strength. Baba said that Avatar did not use His divine power in their life time except infinite knowledge to awaken mankind. He did not display His strength in public but definitely convinced His mandali of His divine physical strength. After regaining normal consciousness Baba visited house of His schoolmate friend Khodu (nickname sailor) who tried to scuffle with Meher Baba. Baba said He is not same Meherwan of his  schooldays. Baba threw him far with a slight push which made him to realize the divinity of Himself..  Once a heavy weight disciple nick named Bapu displeased Baba. Baba lifted him by neck from ground floor to first floor by stairs and no one dared to stop Him. In another episode, Baba forced young Adi K. Irani to wrestle with Him with full force after 40 days fast and floored him down in no time. Forty of mandali men could budge single Meher Baba in tug of war. In His older days once coming back from mandali hall to His room carried by Eruch & Francis on their shoulders, Baba threw them on the floor with a flick of two fingers only when they doubted Baba’s as Avatar being so helpless.

  1. Infinite Knowledge

Meher Baba only used His infinite knowledge only to awaken His lovers. He was all knowing and past present and future of every soul was like open book for Him.

Baba had unique way of reaching to His lover’s mind and heart using His infinite knowledge. He used to answer the questions of His lovers even before asking by themselves to quiet their mind and open their heart. Many intellectuals came to Baba with the list of questions, mostly were either answered by Baba in silence. Their mind became blank in presence of Baba and they could not ask anything. Pandit Gopinath Kaviraj from Benaras came to Baba with list of questions' when he came before Baba, he was blank and sang in praise of Meher Baba.

Once in darshan program, Baba asked Pukar to collect question-slips from His lovers to be answered later. About 100 question-slips were collected. In next meeting Baba asked for it. Pukar revealed that he had no slip left with him as all questioners had withdrawn their question-slips having got the answers of their questions from Baba in silence. After this Baba asked C.D. Deshmukh to compile a book based on His discourses which would cover the answers to questions of intellectuals on spiritual aspects.

  1. Exceptionally Beautiful

Baba had extra ordinary beautiful and radiating personality incomparable to anyone on the earth. Many senior Baba lovers are witness to it. Visitors used to get mesmerized by Baba’s beauty. Baba said Avatar always appears in male form with beautiful personality like all previous Avatars had.  Avatar selects His parents and even the place of His birth. This is one of difference between Avatar and Sadguru who as man after attaining realisation retains the same body throughout his life like five Perfect Masters of Meher Baba.

Above all, the attributes of Avatar Meher Baba is beyond imagination so beyond description also. Any description of His divine attributes in words would always fall short of His divinity.

N.B. There are many interesting and inspiring episodes which would substantiate many traits of Avatar Meher Baba are written in Lord Meher and other books by mandali members.
